#9. Ride in a police car

Even during a global pandemic I’m still an adventurer!

I’ve met a few police officers here in the Netherlands, and at the end of April I was invited to go on a ride along — #9 on my list

On patrol.

For most of the day, we were too busy to take pictures. We did so many things!

— A confused lady needed to be brought home.
— An argument broke out between tourists, so I had to mediate. My fellow officers later complimented me on how I was able to calm those people down. I just tried to stay relaxed and show the tourists I was understanding them.
— We made an arrest. I can’t divulge all the details, but I can say I was tasked with guarding the detainee in the back seat. And once we got back to the station I walked him to a cell.

The police officers said they were very proud of me, and I have been invited to come back again in the near future.

Around the middle of the day we stopped by Dam Square.

Dam Square is a popular destination in Amsterdam that is typically packed with tourists day and night…

…just not during a pandemic.

We had a little extra time, so this is when we got our photos for the day…

Towards the end of the day, I asked my fellow officers if I could drive.

They said no.

Thank you to Nienke and all the police officers in Amsterdam who helped me with this adventure! And thank you to Ineke and Bert as well!

COVID-19 teddy bear hunt

The Coronavirus pandemic has caused countries all over the world to issue lockdowns and encourage citizens to practice social distancing.

In early April, my friend Bo and I heard about this game where teddy bears would stand by windows and wave to children who were out walking around their neighborhood.

The children would see how many teddy bears they could spot, and the teddy bears would see how many children they could spot.

We thought it was a great idea, so we got started on it right away.

For weeks we were extremely vigilant.

Even when things looked quiet.

Bo lives in Zelhem, a small town on the eastern border of the Netherlands. I was just there for a visit. I’ve since moved back to Amsterdam.

Now I wave to children from this balcony!

Thank you Ineke, Bert, and Nienke for helping me during this teddy bear hunt!

Roosevelt leaves America

This January I left the United States for the first time — I took a plane to Amsterdam in the Netherlands!

Before the journey Louisa made me a passport. It wasn’t issued by the US government, so I don’t think I can count it for #15 on my list. But still, we were both hoping the customs agent would agree to give me a stamp when I arrived.

We flew out of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

The last time I flew on a plane I was only going as far as Louisville, Kentucky.

I knew I was in good hands with Captain Robert and Copilot Frank, but they could tell I was feeling a little nervous…

…so they took me around on a preflight check.

The engines on KLM’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner are huge!

We even got to see the cockpit!

After the preflight check we all boarded the plane.

I just wish the windows were a tiny bit lower.

Here I am mid-flight. You can tell I’m just about to fall asleep.

It was a long flight, but I made it. And guess what?

Customs gave me a stamp.

Thank you Dave, Louisa, Robert, Frank, and the rest of the flight crew for taking such good care of me.

I finished a puzzle!

#64 on my list says ‘Help someone finish a 1000 piece puzzle’

Louisa and I didn’t do that.

We did something way harder…

We did a 2000 piece puzzle.

It was slow going at the start. The colors were all pretty similar.

But we kept at it.

And we kept making progress.

Then before we knew it…

…we were in the home stretch.

Here’s a picture of me concentrating while working on the clouds in the top left corner.

It took us three weeks to finish it. What a great way to spend the holidays!

The Neuschwanstein castle is in southern Germany. Maybe one day I’ll get to see it for real.

Thank you Louisa for helping me cross another item off my list!
